Mike Tamburelli

Our eagle-eyed internal talent scouts discovered Mike while he was writing freelance pieces about gaming, ramen, anime, and music. He ticked all our boxes for a production associate: a deep knowledge of Japan, tech skills, and impressive Japanese language skills.

Mike’s interest in Japan goes back to when he was a kid in Kansas, playing computer games. “I’d see Japanese names in all the credits, and that pushed me to study languages at university.” During a study abroad year at Sophia University’s Tokyo campus, he decided Tokyo was his soulmate city. “I love it so much,” he says. “I feel like you could spend your entire life here, and always find something new.”

Through FunkyCorp, he finally made it back to Tokyo, after living in Nagoya for a couple of years. “I’m not even close to being unpacked,” he laughs.  Working with the team, Mike has found a new mission: “I feel excited to be spreading more awareness about Japan,” he says. “After the Olympics, it’s going to be a challenge to retain that growth in tourist numbers. This job makes me feel like I am doing something to make a positive difference.” Although he’s traveled a lot within Japan and loves city life, his favorite spot is actually quite remote: Takayama, in Gifu. “It’s one of the snowiest parts of Japan. It’s very picturesque, and I love the traditional atmosphere.”

His other passion is ramen, and on weekends he seeks out new ramen experiences. “The best bowl of ramen I ever had was in Sapporo – it was a classic Hokkaido miso ramen, with butter, corn and cheese, from a little hole-in-the-wall place. That was six years ago, and I’m still searching for a worthy follow up…”
